Perched within a high rise in Mumbai, Evelyn House by Quirk Studio is conceived as a refined family residence that gently bridges generations, sensibilities, and lifestyles. Designed as a home that would endure beyond passing trends, the project embraces a language of timelessness where restraint, warmth, and proportion become more powerful than ornamentation. The result is a home that feels sophisticated yet deeply personal, luxurious yet entirely liveable.
The brief called for a residence that would comfortably accommodate a multi generational family while maintaining an atmosphere of understated elegance. Instead of following a singular visual theme, the design approach focused on creating a layered environment that could harmoniously bring together differing aesthetic preferences under one cohesive identity. Every space within the home feels calm, intuitive, and welcoming, allowing the architecture and material palette to quietly shape the experience.
One of the apartment’s defining features is its expansive wraparound terrace that embraces the home from multiple sides. Rare within Mumbai’s dense urban fabric, this feature allows natural light to flood the interiors throughout the day, transforming the residence into an airy sanctuary suspended above the city. Combined with generous ceiling heights and large openings, the apartment acquires an almost open to sky quality, blurring the distinction between indoors and outdoors.
The arrival experience begins with an unusually spacious foyer that feels less like a transitional passage and more like a carefully composed antechamber. Complete with seating and moments of pause, it establishes an immediate sense of warmth and hospitality. From here, the home unfolds into an expansive living room thoughtfully divided into formal and informal zones. The interiors are wrapped in a soft, muted palette where marble flooring, white panelled walls, delicate mouldings, and subtly detailed ceilings create a serene and textured backdrop. Rather than competing for attention, the design allows light, proportion, and materiality to become the focal points.
In contrast to the restrained softness of the living areas, the dining room introduces a dramatic and immersive shift in mood. Entirely enveloped in a rich crimson umber tone, the space feels intimate, theatrical, and deeply atmospheric. Walls and ceilings dissolve into a singular colour field that frames the sculptural lighting, veined marble dining table, and warm wooden accents with remarkable depth. Designed for long conversations and memorable gatherings, the room emerges as one of the home’s most expressive moments while still remaining refined and balanced.
The private quarters are arranged along a central passage that ensures both privacy and fluidity. Each room carries its own distinct character while remaining connected to the home’s overarching design language. The den adopts a deeper tonal palette with rich green wooden panelling extending seamlessly into the adjoining bathroom through patterned green and white tiles, creating a space that feels layered and intimate.
The bedrooms range from understated and classic to playful and imaginative. The nursery, in particular, introduces a softer and more whimsical atmosphere inspired by storybook landscapes. Forest inspired murals, warm timber flooring, and an uncluttered layout create a nurturing environment designed to evolve gracefully with the child over time.
Positioned at the far end of the residence are two master suites, one designed for the senior couple and the other for the younger generation. Facing one another, both suites are complete with expansive walk in wardrobes and generously appointed bathrooms. Despite their individuality, each room continues the home’s larger narrative of quiet luxury through balanced proportions, tactile materials, and a restrained palette.
Materiality plays an integral role in shaping the identity of Evelyn House. Marble is used extensively throughout the residence, lending a sense of continuity, permanence, and understated grandeur. Layered wood panelling, bespoke parquet flooring, mixed metals, wallpapers, and tactile fabrics introduce warmth and softness, ensuring that the home never feels overly formal. Bathrooms and powder rooms become jewel like moments within the overall composition, where mirrors, sculptural basins, lighting, and richly detailed marble surfaces come together with remarkable precision.
Completed within an ambitious eight month timeline, Evelyn House stands as a testament to thoughtful planning and timeless design. Rather than relying on excess, the residence celebrates generosity of space, natural light, and carefully considered details. It is a home that feels composed yet deeply human, crafted not simply to impress, but to age gracefully alongside the family that inhabits it.
