Client Brief:

As a business family that spends a lot of time travelling, the client brief was for a home that combines functionality with clean lines whilst also having a sanctuary-like feel. Our client wanted her home to have a sense of calm and to be a place she could wind down in when she returns from her travels. At the same time she wanted a sociable space, where she could welcome guests in a relaxed atmosphere. A minimalist scheme that would look modern, fresh and feel relaxing.

City & Neighbourhood

Located atop a small hill in Thrissur, Kerala, India this 12000 sq. ft. courtyard home could not look more typically traditional; from the outside.

The roof was added, and a swimming pool and guest house were built to the already existing house, which we had done 17 years ago.

Theme of the Space

We wanted a simple scheme that would look modern and fresh and feel relaxing. We used a restrained palette of materials colours, glass and wood, and crisp white to create visual unity throughout the home.

Walkthrough

Step through the door, however and the interior is an elegant mix of global influences and reclaimed pieces selected to work in harmony with the traditional architecture.

Redesigned by Temple Town this property has been turned into a sanctuary holding fast to the core principles of promoting local and sustainable interiors.

This home combines functionality with clean lines whilst also having a sanctuary-like a feel.

The courtyard connects all the main action zones, the living, dining, foyer and bedrooms, giving definition to the space whilst retaining those open views.

Embrace natural: For the living room we chose only a few key shades picked from the surroundings.

The palette used is delicate greys, beiges, browns and greens to lighten the space and not detract from the natural beauty. In the dining room ,the marble table top adds a tactile element to a pared-back scheme and a simple customised iron pendant light complements the natural look.

A collection of mismatched white porcelain crockery with violet and white flowers of “Daisy Chrysanthemum” creates a simultaneously understated and dramatic interior.

In each bedroom, the neutral palette of wooden flooring and white walls is offset with charming accessories.

Colour & Material Palette

We are all about encouraging reuse, so we help people to recognize what fabulous items they already own and yet create interiors that work well functionally and is always tranquil and welcoming. Inspired by the wealth of natural beauty surrounding this home we chose to use only a few key shades throughout the house.

Greys, beiges, browns, and greens are all inspired by nature.

Sustainable/green features

Not only does this house boast stylish good looks and a functional flow g layout it’s energy-efficient. The entire house is solar-powered, and rainwater harvesting tanks with filtration have been done. During the daytime, the courtyard provides ample natural light and ventilation.
