Set against the verdant backdrop of Mumbai’s Aarey forest, this apartment is a soulful reflection of its owners — a well-travelled couple deeply rooted in tradition, culture, and their shared love of music. Having almost three decades of experience in Interior-Architecture, Sunanda Sastry & Associates was the perfect choice as the firm blends craft and technology in making liveable spaces that are client-centric and filled with joy.

The design eloquently marries their rich personal history with thoughtful modern elements, creating a home that tells their story as Sunanda Sastry believes that the home, which is always simple yet comfortable, also should be ‘spiritual luxe’! A word she has coined to describe a design that does not go overboard with gloss and glass, does not scream of extravagance, but speaks of sobriety and subtle elegance. “It also bears the spirit of India and all that is handmade, laden with a definite whiff of barkat (blessings). How else could one explain the feel of good vibes that emanate from the home, whence even brands succumb to the owner’s aura!” she explains.

The foundation of the apartment is a sweeping expanse of flooring that is evocative of Jaisalmer stone. Sturdy yet elegant, it provides a resilient base for the treasures the couple has gathered over decades of living across India. Each piece in their collection is a tangible memory, embodying their deep appreciation for Indian heritage.

Polished wood accents and hand-painted Tanjore-style artworks, lovingly crafted by the client herself, infuse the interiors with warmth and personality. Sustainability meets style as repurposed furniture aligns with contemporary needs while blending seamlessly into the design’s aesthetic. The colour palette is a vibrant medley of rust, natural wood, Jaisalmer-inspired yellow, green Kota stone, and bright silks, evoking a sense of tradition and vitality.

The entryway is a prelude to the apartment’s charm. A handwoven fabric from Kutch is framed above a reimagined stained-glass piece, offering a fresh, artisanal welcome. A wooden eave from South Karnataka adorns the main door, accompanied by a uniquely oversized nameplate, setting the tone for the personalized interiors.
A carved study area overlooks the entrance foyer, which features earthy brick-coloured tiles from C. Tribhivandas. A floor-length wooden library unit pairs beautifully with green Kota stone flooring. In the living room, a rustic wall adorned with wrought iron crafts from Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district forms a striking backdrop to a traditional jhoola (swing).

The living area is designed for both style and function, with movable chairs and sofas catering to the couple’s frequent gatherings. Large centre tables adorned with glass globules and fresh lilies catch the morning sunlight filtering through sheer curtains, while carefully curated personal artifacts imbue every corner with sentiment and history.
A standout feature is the “Ezone,” a harmonious blend of tradition and technology. One half is equipped with an advanced music system, while the other celebrates the sitar, symbolizing the couple’s roles as both hosts and learners (shagirds).

A special room, designed for the couple’s children when they visit, reflects their personalities and childhood memories. Filled with vibrant colours and nostalgic elements, it doubles as a guest bedroom, offering both warmth and versatility.
One of the most significant challenges was integrating the couple’s diverse interests and collections into a cohesive design. Each piece, rich in personal history, required thoughtful placement to maintain its prominence without overwhelming the space. Additionally, creating a unique character within the confines of a gated community’s uniform layouts called for creative ingenuity.

The apartment epitomizes the blend of old and new, where repurposed furniture, vibrant hues, and personalized decor coalesce into a warm, inviting, and nostalgic home. It is not just a living space but a testament to the couple’s journey, a sanctuary where tradition meets modernity, set in harmony with its lush natural surroundings.
