Decor with a roar: bring nature to your home with Beyond Dreams’ latest fabric collection, Kuruka 2.0.

It’s time to roll out the red carpet, or shall we say the savannah rug, because Beyond Dreams is delighted to introduce its bespoke Kuruka 2.0. fabric collection, which is designed to infuse your home with the heartbeat of the wild. The collection pays incredible homage to the untamed beauty, the vibrant culture, and the fierce wildlife of the Masai Mara.

Co-founders of Beyond Dreams, Akshay and Avani Khurana, continue to channelise their shared love for Masai Mara through the collection. Be it the patterns that mimic the authentic tribal war scene of Africa or colours that evoke the vibrant Masai people’s heritage, these fabrics serve as the perfect eye candy for your culture-enthusiast soul. Exuding an amalgamation of earthy and muted tones, their vast variety of textile goes perfectly well with Kuruka’s sculpted lounge chairs and abstract couches, emanating African wilderness with each yard while harmoniously blending contemporary design and ancient traditions of Masai Mara.

Through the authentic tribal motifs and iconic Masai spear prints adorning this collection, a compelling narrative unfolds. The intricate details of the motifs speak to the craftsmanship of those who created them, while the starkness of the spear prints reminds us of the raw, unyielding nature of life’s challenges. It weaves a tale of the eternal dance between predator and prey, life and death, beauty and brutality—a vivid portrayal of the intricate interplay within the circle of life.

At Beyond Dreams, we believe that home is where the heart roams free and the soul finds its sanctuary. The Kuruka 2.0. Fabric Collection is way more than just a testament of love for the haunter of the woods who’d like to look around and be reminded of the majestic place that Masai Mara is.

Expressing their love for the Masai Mara inspired Kuruka 2.0. collection, the founders of Beyond Dreams reveal, “This collection has been quite close to our hearts. It’s been our dream to translate our love for Masai, its people, and culture through our art. We’ve tried to push the boundaries in terms of creating prints which are bold yet soothingly sophisticated with its earthy tones.”

Standing tall at 6 feet, the blue Jaipur Totem is the architect’s strong commitment to product design. Ashiesh Shah was also inspired by the style of artist Constantin Brâncuși and a ceramic Ettore Sottsass piece that he bought at Milan’s Gallery Nilufar.

Apical Reform’s Betula Chair is a sheer example of fluid de-contructivism pleasing aesthetics and comfort.

Project Name
 : Betula Chair
Architects/Designer : Apical Reform
Project Status : Built
Website : www.apicalreform.com

Designer Description: The chair, a sinuous structure made entirely out of birch ply, is an example of fluid de-contructivism that is pleasing aesthetically and comforting ergonomically. The fluid form of the Betula was derived from a functional posture and the idea of continuity of the lines. The technique of layering is one of the key factors that adds to the aura of the chair and further beautifies the the form. Smooth flowing lines run along the form to give the impression of giving rise to a cantilevered, sculptured structure that is also pleasing to the eyes.

Concealed within the simple form of the chair is the meticulously resolved stability and comfort. The technique and the assembly involves an understanding of the overall form and the material used. Precision in alignment was one of the most crucial factors involved in the entire process. Birch Ply was used as a material as it was part of an exploration that were carried out with this material. The ideation for this project remains ongoing with further resolved prototypes under development.

“Furniture meets Art”

Project Name
: The Vulture Chair – Newborn Series
Designer : Shitij Dogra Architects

Ever wondered furniture could be something more than it should be?

New Delhi based architect Shitij Dogra creates a new perception towards art and furniture through his Newborn series launched this year. The “Vulture Chair” is one in the series that blurs the thin line between furniture and sculpture.

The pieces perfectly blend art and furniture design to create a typology of functional sculptures.

One major thing that a sculpture provides and a furniture piece fails to is a discussion. However, a sculpture being a forerunner in the realm of aesthetics falls short in providing functionality to the end user.

Newborn series aims to blur the line between a furniture piece and a sculpture. With its inspiration taken from movements like surrealism, expressionism and modernism, it aims to open new domains in terms of how furniture is perceived. The pieces aspire to open novel avenues, combining art and functionality to give form to a new typology called ‘functional sculptures’. This exercise not only aims to find a middle ground between a sculpture and a furniture piece but also critiques the notions and norms in which furniture and sculptures have dwelled in the past.

With a total of eight pieces, Newborn series has been thoughtfully conceived and carefully crafted with a strong material sensibility. The pieces do not conform to clean lines and straight edges of the modernist belief; rather, they aim to find beauty in the imperfection of the materials used. Also, the materials of these furniture pieces have been kept in their natural state. This approach not only aims at creating pieces that are modest and soulful, but evokes a certain bond with the body which is timeless and ageless.
