High above the restless rhythm of South Mumbai, Noire House by Quirk Studio unfolds as a calm and considered sanctuary. Occupying the twenty first and twenty second floors of a residential tower, this duplex was envisioned as a contemporary villa in the sky. Home to a couple in their forties and their two grown children, the brief called for expansiveness without excess, clarity without coldness, and a quiet yet assured expression of luxury.

The design responds with confidence and restraint. Rather than relying on spectacle, the home derives its presence from proportion, material nuance, and fluid spatial planning. It is a space that feels generous yet composed, where each element has room to breathe.

The lower level opens into a sweeping living and dining area defined by volume and light. Full height openings dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, leading onto an eight hundred square foot private terrace that becomes the heart of the home. In a city where outdoor space is a rarity, this terrace offers scale, air, and relief. Finished in a chevron patterned stone, it balances softness and precision, becoming both a gathering space and a moment of pause above the city.

Within the living zone, a multipurpose den is seamlessly integrated. Though visually connected, it can be fully enclosed when required. A concealed Murphy bed is tucked within panelled walls, allowing the room to transform effortlessly into a guest bedroom without disrupting the visual continuity of the space. This adaptability reflects the studio’s thoughtful layering of function within a refined architectural framework.

The upper level is dedicated to privacy and retreat. Two expansive bedroom suites each feature their own walk in wardrobes and indulgent bathrooms. The master suite is distinguished by parquet flooring in deep wood tones that introduce warmth and intimacy. Bathrooms throughout the home are clad in richly veined marble and patterned floors inspired by English design traditions, creating spaces that feel tactile and contemplative rather than merely utilitarian.

An independent mandir and a discreet study nook complete this level, offering areas for reflection and focus. These spaces are modest in scale yet powerful in atmosphere, reinforcing the home’s balance between openness and introspection.

Materiality plays a central role in shaping the home’s identity. Lime plastered walls in muted grey tones envelop the interiors in softness, while a continuous white marble floor streaked with subtle grey veins runs across the lower level, grounding the expansive volumes with coherence. Deep wood accents appear across walls, custom furniture, and the sculptural ribbon staircase, lending warmth and gravitas.

The staircase itself is a defining architectural feature. Finished in PU and edged with a glass railing, it curves gracefully around a capsule elevator that rises as a transparent column through the duplex. This vertical interplay of solid and glass introduces both drama and practicality, ensuring ease of access while contributing to the spatial narrative.

Furniture and lighting selections reinforce the home’s understated elegance. Pieces sourced from Blueloft, Objectry, Sarita Handa, Solid Bench, Soisu, and Waulte strike a balance between comfort and craftsmanship. Lighting from Glass Forest, Artemis, Stem Lights, and Length Breadth Height washes the textured surfaces in a warm, ambient glow. Artworks by Abhay Sehgal and Kapil Anant animate the walls with subtle vibrancy, while greenery curated by Studio Palasa and Sparrow Nursery introduces a gentle biophilic presence.

Noire House ultimately feels less like a display of design and more like a carefully composed atmosphere. It is an orchestration of light, material, and scale that favours quiet confidence over overt drama. Suspended above the city, it offers not only panoramic views but also a deeply personal experience of calm, clarity, and belonging.
