In the dense urban fabric of Chennai, where buildings rise shoulder to shoulder and privacy is often a luxury, Casa Lume by Anthillaa Architectz emerges as a study in restraint and resilience. Set on a modest 1600 square foot corner plot measuring forty by forty feet, this stilt plus three floor residence reimagines how a joint family can live together while preserving individual autonomy. With a total built up area of 5400 square feet, the home is less about occupying space and more about shaping experience within it.
The challenge was clear from the outset. The house had to offer serenity without disconnecting from its surroundings. It needed to accommodate two brothers and their parents under one roof, while ensuring that each family unit retained its privacy. The architectural response is thoughtful and layered, allowing the building to reveal itself gradually rather than all at once.
The ground level is reserved for parking and a welcoming visitor lounge. This common area functions as a threshold between the public and the private, setting a gracious tone for guests before they ascend into the more intimate levels of the home.
The first floor is dedicated to the younger brother’s family. It includes two bedrooms, a separate living area, dining space, and kitchen, forming a self contained home within the larger structure. A key requirement for this level was complete privacy from the street. To achieve this, the balconies are fully screened with Corten steel panels, shielding the interiors from view while allowing filtered light and air to pass through. The material introduces a warm, weathered texture to the façade, lending the building a bold yet refined character.
Above, the second floor acts as a shared family domain. Conceived as a bridge between the private zones of the two brothers, it houses a home theatre, gym, leisure area, and a bedroom for the parents. This level becomes the emotional heart of the house, a place where the entire family gathers at different moments of the day. Its defining feature is the sweeping one hundred and eighty degree view of the surrounding urban landscape, opening out to trees, distant hills, and a lake beyond. In contrast to the guarded exterior, this floor feels expansive and liberating.
The third floor belongs to the elder brother and is designed with equal sensitivity. It includes a bedroom and a flexible office or multipurpose space, offering both retreat and productivity within a compact footprint.
Binding these levels together is the staircase, the architectural spine of Casa Lume. Crafted from granite wrapped reinforced concrete, it rests dramatically on a single corner beam without additional supports. More than a circulation element, it becomes a sculptural presence that energizes the house. Each ascent feels intentional, reinforcing the idea that the home is experienced in sequence rather than in a single sweeping view.
Given that the plot lies on a northeast corner, this zone is kept visually open to encourage airflow. It is also wrapped in Corten steel screens, which serve a dual purpose of maintaining privacy and introducing a rustic elegance to the elevation. The façade operates as a climatic and spatial device. Its perforations allow the building to breathe, tempering harsh sunlight while casting intricate patterns within.
The architectural language is composed of clean, orthogonal volumes softened by subtle curves. White planar surfaces establish a sense of calm, while the weathered metal skin introduces depth and a quiet acknowledgement of time. The interplay between these materials creates a dialogue between permanence and change.
Natural light is treated as a primary design element rather than an afterthought. Skylights are carefully positioned to reduce reliance on artificial lighting, drawing daylight deep into the core of the house. Even the innermost spaces maintain a visual and emotional connection to the outside. As sunlight filters through the perforated screens, it breaks into shifting fragments that move across walls and floors throughout the day. These evolving shadows introduce rhythm and variation, ensuring the interiors remain dynamic and alive.
From the street, Casa Lume appears measured and composed, almost introspective. From within, however, it unfolds gradually, revealing layers of light, texture, and perspective. The true essence of the home lies in the journey between floors, in the quiet pauses along the staircase, and in the subtle transitions from enclosure to openness.
Casa Lume is not a house that seeks immediate attention. Instead, it invites contemplation. It reminds us that architecture at its most thoughtful does more than organize space. It shapes the way light enters a room, the way a family gathers, and the way one feels while moving through it.
