There are some spaces that don’t need to be explained — they speak for themselves. This one, the sun-soaked balcony of a South Indian family living in the heart of Maharashtra, does exactly that.

At first glance, it’s all color and light. But step inside, and it tells a deeper story. What was once an ordinary terrace overlooking the Pashan hills is now a place that holds memory, culture, and magic.

The layout is simple and intentional. A vibrant teal bench, upholstered in rich magenta fabric, sits against a mustard yellow wall that radiates warmth. The cushions—each one different, none of them loud—layer the bench with patterns that nod to both nostalgia and playfulness.

Across from it, two foldable wooden chairs with bold floral cushions rest on a striped rug, catching the sunlight that pools on the floor in the late afternoon.

The center is anchored by a modest wooden table—nothing extravagant, but thoughtfully styled with fresh flowers and a fruit bowl. It invites you to sit, snack, talk. Maybe even linger longer than you planned.

Then, the plants. Everywhere you look, there’s green. Not the kind you arrange for effect, but the kind that’s loved, watered, spoken to. Tall leafy palms reach for the ceiling, ferns spill over from hanging pots, and smaller planters in blue and ochre line the edges. This isn’t just decor—it’s a quiet jungle in the sky.

One of the most heartfelt details lives on the far wall. Hand-painted by the family and their children, it features traditional Indian motifs that dance across the surface—organic, imperfect, full of soul. It wasn’t in the original design brief, but it quickly became the brief. It gave the designers a beautiful problem to solve: how to build around what already mattered.

The woven mirror, the pendant light, the cotton drapes—they all stay in their lane. Everything here feels like it belongs. Like it’s been collected over time, not copied from a catalog.

What truly elevates this space isn’t just the sunlight or the view or the palette. It’s the people who live in it. Their culture, their longing for the south, their easy laughter, and the comfort they take in things done by hand—all of it shows up here, between the textures and shadows.
